Center Absences
Each student has a scheduled day and time for attending Kumon. If you are early or late to your appointment, we ask you to pick up your new work and take it home. In order to receive your work, your old work must be completed and returned.
If you miss your scheduled appointment, you can come in on your Center day or within 24 hours to turn in your child's old homework and exchange it for his new assignments.
Please do not call the Center to arrange an alternate day or time for your child to attend if you miss a session. We are unable to reschedule missed appointments.
If you can't make it to your Kumon appointment or stop by to pick up the new assignments, please call and let us know. Your child's work will be rescheduled for the next week and we will look forward to seeing him on his next Center day.
Please be sure to notify us at least two weeks in advance of any extended vacation in order to give us ample time to plan and organize for your child's absence. Thanks!
Homework and homegrading
Kumon students have homework for an average of 10-15 minutes daily. Six days of the week they complete their work at home and one day they complete their work at the Center. On their Center Day they also bring all of their homework to the Center and exchange it for the next week's assignments.
Parents have a vital role in the Kumon daily routine. After your child completes his daily work, you are expected to grade it promptly. Your 5-10 minute commitment is vital because
- your child corrects and learns from his mistakes daily
- your child will make fewer mistakes overall and require less repetition
- your child will be more motivated because you are involved
- you have a wonderful apportunity each day to help your child achieve
If your child comes to the Center with homework that is not completed, homegraded, or corrected, he will not be given new work to take home, but will instead keep the incomplete work so you can grade it and he can make necessary corrections. He will then come back the next week on his Center Day with his work completed, corrected, and ready to turn in.
Planning and Progress
With over a decade of experience planning student's work, our Kumon Staff thoroughly knows the Kumon Method and curriculum. Based on your child's performance on a simple diagnostic test, we establish a recommended starting point and proceed forward from there. We encourage ongoing communication and utilize feedback with our students (and parents) to personalize and adjust your study program as we proceed through each level's pages. We recently computerized our Center Management System and now use a powerful database and planning environment which enhances the individualized planning your child receives and helps ensure that he is moving through his program at the optimum pace.
Fun at Kumon Santa Cruz
There's no doubt about it, Kumon students have to do their daily work to improve their skills in math and reading. But we try to make that work as pleasant as possible and we like to reward our students so they know we're behind them 100%. We celebrate their effort and achievement!
One week during the month is called Cosmic Cards Week, when students can select these Kumon collectible cards and trade them with their fellow Kumon students. The space-themed cards are a real hit with many of our students!
When students complete a Kumon study level and successfully pass their level test, they are rewarded with a printed certificate of achievement along with some Kumon cash. These achieving students enjoy seeing their name printed in the Center's newsletter the next month.
We celebrate our students' anniversaries of study in two ways. Students become Kumon Santa Cruz Scholars after one year of study and they receive a beautifully engraved trophy. Students celebrating multi-year anniversaries of study receive a printed certificate of achievement and a gift card for shopping at Barnes & Noble. Our Kumon Scholars can find their name printed in our monthly Newsletter during their anniversary month.
We have an annual awards ceremony and we proudly display all 100% correct homework assignments
Kumon North America recognizes Honor Roll students quarterly with printed certificates of achievement. Kumon also offers an incentive program for students called the "Cosmic Club." Students accrue points for monthly enrollment and progress in the Program and then redeem those points for awesome prizes.
Vacations
Kumon worksheets are totally portable and travel well. Our Kumon Santa Cruz students have toted their Kumon boxes all over the world! If your family is planning a vacation or another activity which will result in your child's absence from Kumon on his Center day, notify us as early as possible or at least one week ahead of time so that we can plan and prepare extra work for him to receive when he attends the Center the week before his absence.
Planning and organizing work for your child takes a great deal of thought and organization. Please help us give you and your child the best service possible by giving us plenty of advance notice!
It's easy to inform us of your vacation plans. You can drop off a vacation schedule at the center, leave a phone message, and send an e-mail or a note letting us know the last day your child will be in class and the day they will return to class. Simple!
Also, please remember that any work your child completes over vacations must be home graded as usual! If your child does Kumon in the Caymans, so do you!
Holidays and Center Closures
Center closures are announced well in advance. We use all of the venues available to us to inform you of any schedule changes. Center closures are announced in the paper newsletter that is sent home each month, verbally when your child checks in and out of class the week before a closing, and in the Calendar section of this website.
Of course, please feel free to check with Center staff for information on specific dates that we will be closed.
Tuition Policy
Key points of the Kumon Santa Cruz Center tuition policy are:
- Monthly tuition is paid in advance, and the next month's tuition is due by the 26th of the current month. A $10 late fee is assessed to accounts when tuition is received after the due date.
- You are always obligated to submit your tuition by the due date. This is true regardless of vacations, absences, etc. Postmark dates are irrelevant; if you plan on mailing your payment to the Center, it is your responsibility to ensure enough time such that we receive it by the due date.
- We accept payment via electronic funds transfer. We use Deposit Express and simply enrolling ensures that your tuition payment is withdrawn automatically from your checking account each month.
- A student may be absent for two consecutive months without incurring fees or being discharged.
About Leaving Kumon...
When you enroll in Kumon, you read and sign our 'Notice to Parents' form listing Kumon's policy stating that you are considered enrolled for the month (and are thus obligated to pay tuition) if you take any work dated in the month or if you attend a Canter Day during the particular month.
We request that you give us a written notice 30 days in advance before dropping one of your two subjects of study or before leaving the Program.
Your 30 day written notice will serve to officially withdraw you from the Kumon Program, just as your initial application form officially marked your enrollment.
